Department of Pathology & Lab medicine. GIMS provides state of the art diagnostic services thereby augmenting patient care. The department is running lab services in the field of Hematology, Cytopathology, Clinical Pathology and Histopathology. Additionally, the department has contributed significantly in the establishment of multidisciplinary Molecular Research Laboratory which is playing a pivotal role in COVID-19 diagnosis and patient care. Concerted efforts are underway to establish immunohistochemistry, HPLC and Flow Cytometery to further enhance patient care. The department will soon begin active teaching of 2nd phase MBBS students from September 2020.

Dr Shivani Kalhan is an alumnus of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, Pune (1991) and a postgraduate from Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt (Delhi University; 2000). She holds a diploma in Hospital Administration from National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), New Delhi. She has more than 17 years teaching and administrative experience and has served in Army Medical Corps for 10 years. Dr Shivani Kalhan joined GIMS on 21st April 2020 as Professor and Head (Pathology) and has additionally been given the charge of Head of Laboratory Medicine including Central Lab (Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology), Emergency Lab and Molecular Lab. Prior to GIMS, she was working at SHKM Government Medical College, Nalhar (Nuh), Haryana.

Dr. Shalini Bahadur is an alumini of Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi and did her MD Pathology from renowned KGMU, Lucknow. She completed her senior residency from very prestigious Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi and worked as Assistant Professor for 4 years from the same. She worked in some other eminent institute like Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi as Assistant Professor and NDMC Medical College and Hindu Rao Hospital as Associate professor. Since November 2017 she is Associate Professor and Head of Department of Pathology. Under her guidance and supervision Haematology services have been expanded to include bone marrow aspirations and biopsy and coagulation studies. she started cytopathology and histopathology and is also Incharge of blood bank GIMS which become operational since February2019. She has published more than 20 articles in national and international journals and attended as well as presented papers and posters in distinguished conferences all over the India.

Research activities by the department

Research Activities-
(i) Development of Iso-thermal PCR and CRISPR- Cas 12 based rapid and porable corona virus SARS- Cov2 COVID-19 detection kit.
(ii) Comparative analysis of host factors among individuals with novel corona virus infection.
(iii) Prognostic significance of Neutrophil lympocyte ratio, Lymphocyte monocyte ratio, Platelet lymphocyte ratio and CRP in COVID – 19 patients: An experience from a tertiary care hospital in Western UP.
(iv) The transfusion department is currently part of ICMR trial to study efficacy of convalescent plasma therapy in COVID – 19 patients.
